Tough Mudder!

I believe it was Eleanor Roosevelt who said “do one thing every day that scares you.” Well, I can’t say that I follow that exactly, but I can say that this weekend, I managed to do a lot of things that scared me all in one day! The Tri-State Tough Mudder in New Jersey was a goal that I had in mind for quite some time. A few months ago, I had worked up the courage to actually sign up and convince a couple of friends (who also happen to be personal trainers) to sign up with me. Through training, I felt a sense of uneasiness and even a bit of fear (theirwebsite does a good job of scaring the crap out of you). Finally, October 20th was the BIG DAY – as scared as I was, I managed to come out alive and had a lot of fun throughout the 12-mile obstacle course. Jumping into a dumpster full of ice water in the beginning went from being frightening to invigorating and sliding into mud went from being gross to silly.

I will say that as exciting as the event was and as rewarding it is to have finished it, I could not have done it without an incredible team. There was my personal trainer who made me strong enough to think climbing muddy hills was relatively easy. There were my 2 teammates, Chris and Josh, who helped me get up and over 12 foot walls, encouraged me when I was terrified of jumping off of a 15 foot platform into really cold water, and laughed with me when I got zapped in the ear with a live wire (I’ll admit…it hurt a bit). There were my friends who had done it before and gave me tips on how to navigate the course. And the friends who posted encouraging notes on Facebook. Last, but not least, there was my husband who kept reminding me that I was truly tough enough for this event and then stood in the sun for 4 hours to watch. So, what’s my point? My point is that the obstacles and seemingly scary things in our lives can be overcome with a good support system. Surrounding yourself with those who want to help you reach your goals makes something that seems impossible more doable. Take a minute to think about one or two goals that you’d like to accomplish in the next year. Who can help you get there? What role do different people in your life have in getting you to your finish line? Gather your team and get started.
