Almost exactly a year ago, my hubby and I participated in a 10-day “sugar detox” and it just may be time for another one. I remember struggling through the first 3 days of not eating my usual sweet treats (like ice cream and chocolate!), but feeling AMAZING by day 4 and really not missing the sugar at all by day 10. In fact, I even recall giving my husband a “free pass” on Father’s Day and he felt so good he decided not to take it – seriously, I thought I broke him 😛
While I believe there is always room in your eating plan for a little bit of indulgence – I mean, what’s life without ice cream?!?! – sometimes, we (even dietitians) need a little “reset” to get our taste buds back to experiencing the natural sugars found in fruits and veggies instead of the intense sweetness found in many baked goods, desserts, and even things like flavored yogurt. I’m not sure the hubby and I will do a full 10 days this time, but we’re certainly going to be focusing a bit more on nature’s naturally sweet gifts like strawberries, blueberries, cherries, apricots, peaches, and melons.
Now, enjoying fruit can be as easy as washing and biting, but sometimes it helps to transform them so they look and feel a little more “dessert-like.” Check out these no-sugar-no-sweetener-added sweet treats that’ll satisfy any sweet tooth 🙂
Not ready to give up the added sugar completely? Or transitioning to lower sugar options? You can certainly combine delicious fruit with a touch of sweetness, like strawberries with a squirt of whipped cream, diced fruit mixed into vanilla yogurt with shaved dark chocolate on top, or you can try out these amazing ideas:
